Tanah Lot Temple, known as Pura Tanah Lot, is one of Bali’s most iconic and picturesque sea temples. Here are some key details about its history and significance:

  • Location: Situated on a large offshore rock in Beraban, Kediri district, Tabanan Regency, approximately 20 kilometers northwest of Denpasar1
  • Name Meaning: “Tanah Lot” translates to “Land in the Sea” in Balinese, reflecting its unique position
  • Historical Background: The temple is believed to have been established by the 16th-century Hindu priest Dang Hyang Nirartha. According to legend, he spent a night on the rock and felt it was a holy place to worship the sea gods
  • Cultural Significance: It is dedicated to Dewa Baruna or Bhatara Segara, the sea god, and is part of a chain of sea temples along Bali’s coast meant to honor and protect the island from evil spirits.
  • Mythology: At the base of the rocky island, venomous sea snakes are believed to guard the temple from evil spirits and intruders. A giant snake, said to be created from Nirartha’s sash, is also believed to protect the temple
  • Restoration: In the 1980s, the temple’s rock face began to crumble. The Japanese government provided a loan to help restore and stabilize the temple, with a significant portion of the rock now being artificial

The temple is especially popular for its stunning sunset views, making it a favorite spot for both tourists and photographers. Visitors can only access the temple on foot during low tide.
